 ESMA Act Explained : ESMA Act invoked in MumbaiEssential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA), is an act to provide for the maintenance of certain essential services and the normal life for the community in India. Essential Services includes Rail, Road, Air Transport, and certain essential things which can disturb normal life of a person.

This ESMA Act can into existence in nineteenth year of the Republic of India by the Parliament of India.

ESMA Act has been invoked in Mumbai, as motorman agitation continued on Tuesday. This agitation severely hit over 7 million people in Mumbai which includes office-goers and students.

Bulk SMS is Mumbai distributed in large scale said that “”People may undertake (train) journey only if it’s very important,” This SMS had a helpline no. 10721 to assist locals.

Arround 170 striking motormen have been taken into custody at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). “They were imposed charges of unlawful assembly and obstructing rail employees from reporting for work”, said Government Railway Police Commissioner Tukaram Chavan.
